We get asked fairly often why our candles use a coconut-soy blend instead of the plain soy wax most "clean" candle brands default to. The honest answer means explaining what each wax actually does, because the marketing language around both has gotten a little loose.
What Soy Wax Actually Does
Soy wax is hydrogenated soybean oil, and it became the standard alternative to paraffin for practical reasons rather than trend. It burns with far less soot than a petroleum-based wax, it comes from a renewable and biodegradable source, and it releases fragrance gradually as it melts instead of front-loading most of the scent in the first twenty minutes and fading from there.
Its real strength is structure. Soy wax sets up firm, holds a wick straight, and resists the soft slumping that lower-density waxes are prone to in a warm room. That same firmness is also its limit: soy is a dependable carrier for fragrance oil, not an exceptional one. A well-made soy candle smells accurate to the label. It doesn't always smell loud enough to carry through a large room.
What Coconut Wax Actually Does
Coconut wax is pressed from coconut oil, and it solves the exact problem soy struggles with: throw. Candle makers who work with it consistently report a stronger cold throw — the scent you notice before ever lighting it — and a stronger hot throw once it's actually burning, compared with soy on its own. It also tends to burn a shade cleaner, and like soy, it comes from a renewable crop rather than a petroleum well.
The catch is structural, and it's a real one. Pure coconut wax is soft, soft enough that a candle poured from nothing else can struggle to hold its shape in a warm room, melt unevenly, or tunnel down the center instead of pooling out to the jar's edge. It's also considerably more expensive than soy. That combination is why a candle made from 100% coconut wax is rare on shelves, and priced accordingly.
Why We Blend the Two
Our candles are poured from a coconut-soy wax blend, and we won't dress that up as some proprietary breakthrough. It's the standard, sensible way candle makers get coconut wax's scent throw without inheriting its structural weaknesses. Soy contributes the backbone — an even melt pool and a wax that holds its shape. Coconut contributes the throw that soy alone can't match, which matters given the fragrance concentrations behind Muskoka, Saffrona, Elysian, and Jasper.
The blend is also entirely paraffin-free, which was never up for negotiation. No paraffin means no petroleum byproducts burning off into the room, no synthetic dye, and none of the black soot ring that builds up on a jar's inside wall after a few burns of a cheaper candle. It isn't a hybrid for the sake of a label claim. It's the wax that actually behaves the way we want a candle in this price range to behave.

A coconut-soy blend rewards a bit of patience on the first burn and is unforgiving if you rush it. Soy-based waxes have "memory" — the melt pool from the first burn sets the pattern every burn after it follows. Let the first burn run until the wax has melted flat from edge to edge, roughly two to three hours depending on the jar, and every burn after that will pool the same way. Extinguish it early on that first burn and you've built a tunnel into the candle that no later burn fully corrects.
Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before every burn. It sounds fussy for something this small, but an untrimmed wick burns hotter than it should, throws more soot, and shortens the candle's life for no real benefit. Keep sessions to two to four hours at a stretch, let the wax fully solidify between burns, and keep the candle away from drafty windows or vents — moving air pulls the flame sideways and burns the wax unevenly no matter how good the wax itself is.
